The carbonic anhydrases: widening perspectives on their evolution, expression and function.

چکیده
Now, some 55 years after its discovery in bovine red cells, carbonic anhydrase (CA), in all its varied forms, continues to challenge and intrigue physiologists, biochemists and molecular geneticists. This is so because of an increasing awareness of the many apparently diverse functions of the different CA isozymes encoded by this large multigene family, the continuing discovery of new CA, or CA-related, genes, and the extensive variation in their hormonal control, cellular expression and subcellular localization.

Carbonic Anhydrases in Cnidarians: Novel Perspectives from the Octocorallian Corallium rubrum
Although the ability to elaborate calcium carbonate biominerals was apparently gained independently during animal evolution, members of the alpha carbonic anhydrases (α-CAs) family, which catalyze the interconversion of CO2 into HCO3-, are involved in the biomineralization process across metazoans. In the Mediterranean red coral Corallium rubrum, inhibition studies suggest an essential role of ...
متن کاملCoral Carbonic Anhydrases: Regulation by Ocean Acidification
Global change is a major threat to the oceans, as it implies temperature increase and acidification. Ocean acidification (OA) involving decreasing pH and changes in seawater carbonate chemistry challenges the capacity of corals to form their skeletons. Despite the large number of studies that have investigated how rates of calcification respond to ocean acidification scenarios, comparatively fe...
متن کاملCarbonic anhydrases and anion transport in mosquito midgut pH regulation.
Mosquito larvae use a digestive strategy that is relatively rare in nature. The anterior half of the larval mosquito midgut has a luminal pH that ranges between 10.5 and 11.5. Most other organisms, both large and small, initiate digestion in an acid medium. The relative uniqueness of the highly alkaline digestive strategy has been a long-standing research focus in larval lepidopterans. More rec...
متن کاملHuman carbonic anhydrases. VI. Levels of isozymes in old and young erythrocytes and in various tissues.
The more acidic, minor isozymes of human carbonic anhydrase types B and C are present in higher concentrations in the older erythrocyte populations. The levels of all of these isozymes can be determined quantitatively by immunochemical methods following their separation by electiofocusing. A wide variety of human tissues have been assayed for carbonic anhydrases. Significant levels of the C typ...
متن کاملStructure and function of carbonic anhydrases. Imidazole binding to human carbonic anhydrase B and the mechanism of action of carbonic anhydrases.
The isoenzymes carbonic anhydrases B and C (EC 4.2.1 .l. C02tH20 2 HCO; t H+) from human erythrocytes have been extensively investigated by different physico-chemical methods in order to understand the mechanism of action of these efficient enzymes [l-4]. These two enzymes differ in their catalytic rate by a factor of about 5 for a number of reactions investigated. The primary structures of the...
